Gianmarco Canato studied bassoon with Diego Chenna and Maurizio Orsini at the Conservatorio “G. Cantelli” in Novara, where he completed his Bachelor in Music Performance with recognition. He proceeded to further his studies with Daniele Galaverna and Vincent Gaudel at the Hochschule der Kuenste in Bern, where he attains both a Master in Music Performance (2018) and a Master Specialized in Soloism (2021). In 2024 he completes a Master in Electroacustic Music at the “Conservatorio di Como”, where he studied with Walter Prati, Sandro Mungianu, Alessio Sabella.
Gianmarco Canato followed bassoon masterclasses with Carlo Colombo, Paolo Calligaris, Vincenzo Menghini, Gabriele Screpis, Christian Kunert. He attended improvisation workshops with Alberto Mandarini, Walter Prati, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Francesco Giomi. He played as second bassoon in the “Pomeriggi Musicali” Chamber Orchestra in Milan, the Berner Symphonieorchester; he often works as first or second bassoon with Musikkollegium Winterthur and “Camerata Ducale” chamber orchestra in Vercelli. He worked with renown musicians, like Simone Bernardini, Olivier Darbellay, Roberto Gonzalez-Monja, Florent Heau. He participated in contemporary music performances working with Lennart Dohms, Peter Rundel, Enno Poppe, and performed his own compositions in festival such as Dialoghi Sonori in Milan and SpazioMusica in Cagliari.
He’s currently active as a freelance musician, specialized in chamber music, contemporary and electroacustic music. He performs with different ensembles and works as bassoon and wind chamber music professor with the cooperative “Musica per Varese”. He regularly holds masterclass for bassoon reed construction at the University of Arts in Bern. Since 2024, he’s a professor at the “Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado” in Milan, currently teaching History of Electroacustic Music.
